  Reşit Emre Kongar, M.S.W., Ph.D.Professor of Sociology, writer, former Undersecretary of Culture.Born in Istanbul, TURKEY, 1941, Oct. 13.   Academic CareerGraduated from Faculty of Political Sciences, Ankara University, majoring in economics, 1963. Received his M.S.W., from School of Social Work, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, l966. Ph.D. in Sociology, Hacettepe University, with his thesis on Urban Family Structure in İzmir, 1969. Associate Professorship, with his thesis on Social Change, 1976. Full Professor, by Hacettepe University, with his thesis on Atatürk, 1981. Presently teaching at Yıldız Technical University, İstanbul.   AppointmentsFounder and Director of School of Social Work, Hacettepe University, 1968.Advisor to the Ministry of Tourism, 1976-1979. Member of the High Council for Culture in the Ministry of Culture, 1978-1979. Advisor to the Ministry of Youth and Sports, 1978-1979. Additional appointment to Ankara University to teach Sociology of Art in the Department of Theatre, 1978-1981. Resigned from the University to protest the military regime, 1983. Advisor and administrator, daily newspaper, Hürriyet, 1983-1987. Founder and the Chairman of the Board, KAMAR, Public Opinion Research Firm, 1987-1991. Undersecretary for the Ministry of Culture, 1992-1995. Reappointed as the Professor of Sociology, Hacettepe University, l996. Columnist in daily Cumhuriyet since 1996. Appointed as the Professor of Sociology, Yıldız Technical University, Istanbul, 1997. Appointed as part-time Professor, Istanbul University, Faculty of Political Sciences, 1997-2000. Retired from Yildiz Technical University, 2000. Appointed as the "Advisor to the Board of Editors" of daily Cumhuriyet, September 1, 2001. Presently teaching at Yildiz Technical University on hourly appointment basis, and at Müjdat Gezen School of Arts on voluntary basis. Presently writing two different weekly colums in daily Cumhuriyet, one on politics and one on media.   AwardsU.N. scholarship, 1964-1966. Including one fiction, a historical satire, which has become one of the best sellers in 1990. His memoirs, While I Was the Undersecretary, published in 1996, has also become one the best sellers of the year.Turkey in the 21th Century which has been published in 1998, reached to its 28th edition. His latest book Letters to My Daughters, has also become one of the bestsellers of 2001. He has several books on culture, and social, economic and political change process of Turkish society.
